Biography

Dr. Pengyu (Peter) Liu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematical Sciences and the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology. Dr. Liu’s work is at the interface of mathematics, life sciences and public health. His research group develops novel theories in discrete mathematics and low-dimensional topology to understand the profound connections between discrete, topological and algebraic structures. These theories induce innovative mathematical models and computational methods for analyzing genomic and structural data in molecular biology and systems biology. Dr. Liu’s research group develops, integrates and applies these models and methods to study pathogen genomics and infectious diseases, aiming to solve pressing problems in public health and medicine.

Dr. Liu also has interests in network science and complex systems, as well as in developing mathematical models, computational methods and data analytics tools to address problems in linguistics, cognitive science, social science, economics and urban studies.
