Assistant Professor from our Department, Jonathan Chavez-Casillas, collaborates with researchers from the URI Graduate School of Oceanography to help predict and possibly mitigate harmful algal blooms (HAB). HABs pose a growing threat to local and global economies, and human health. The researchers collect sophisticated imaging data from Narragansett Bay and analyze it using applied mathematics and data science. The research was funded by the Rhode Island Sea Grant and NASA and has resulted in a recent paper published in the journal, Harmful Algae.
